Why UPS is Necessary?

Did you know that power problems can and do occur every day? You heard me right! Electrical disturbances happen not only during storms but every single day!

Lightning strikes against power lines and electrical substations can cause substantial damages to your electrical equipment to domestic and commercial users even if they are miles away. These spikes, surges and noise that occur every day in homes and offices can have the same devastating effect on your computer hardware and software equipment just like how lightning strikes do.

Here is an overview of electrical disturbances that bring great damages to your computer:

SPIKES

A spike is a dramatic increase in voltage normally lasting only a few milliseconds. This may be caused by car accidents resulting in fallen power lines and lightning during a storm. As a result, data corruption during a hard disk read or write cycle as well as component break down due to over voltage or out-of-range voltage.

BLACKOUT

Blackout is a total loss of main power. Here in the Philippines, when experiencing storms, it is expected to suffer from a blackout. This is sometimes caused by power network overload, lightning from storms and car accidents. Hence, loss of unsaved current work and possible loss of entire hard drive contents are inevitable.

BROWNOUT

A brownout is a long-term decrease in supply voltage lasting up to several hours. This is sometimes caused by switching on of large electrical loads and the over demand of utility power such as the increased use of domestic air conditioners during summer months. Just like a blackout, it often happens in our country.

SURGE

A surge is a short term increase in supply voltage. This is caused by switching off of large electrical loads like commercial air conditioners, fridges and industrial motors. If you happen to live near industrial zones, a surge is most likely to happen. This results to damages or premature failure of electronic components, especially to your computer.

NOISE

According to A1 Computers and Service, one electrical disturbance that we don’t realize is the EMI (Electronic Magnetic Interference) and RFI (Radio Frequency Interference) more commonly referred to as the noise induced into the power supply. This is caused by radiation from high energy equipment such as welders, radio transmitters, fluorescent lights and electric switching equipment. These devices greatly impose a distorted signal onto the sine wave. As a result, keyboard lock-up and data corruption through unsynchronized radical impulses being saved as legitimate data.

But the good news is, though these electrical disturbances happen every day, a solution is available!

Meiji Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) is the ideal back-up powering device associated to your computer. This is like the icing on top of your cake!

DSC02903

In the event of power surges and brownouts, Meiji UPS works by carefully controlling or regulating the range of power to your electronic device connected to it, particularly your computers.

When power failure occurs, Meiji UPS will produce an alerting sound which tells you that there is no power and depending on the size of the UPS, it can let your computer keep on running, and make you alert to the fact there is a power failure which will allow you to shut down your computer by yourself.

This means that anything you are working on can be saved and then shut your computer down. It also means that in the event of any form of power surge your computer is protected from great damages.

Feel relieved from stress with your deadlines! Back-up your computer with Meiji UPS. After all, it has never been unwise to make your computer safe!

What an RCBO Actually Does for You

20140527_101356Many people do not know what is an RCBO. And because of this, we, in Meiji Electric, can help you understand the basic functions of an RCBO, so you can handle safety electrical measures at home without paying for the services of an electrician.

RCBO, also known as Residual Current Circuit Breaker with Over-Current Protection, is an extraordinary circuit breaker with three main functions:

  1. To detect residual current due to ground fault
  2. To detect overload or over-current on a circuit; and
  3. To protect against short circuit

Safety purposes against ground faults

Electrical experts will install an RCBO for safety purposes against ground faults which can kill people, especially to those homes and establishments which are most likely to operate in wet areas like bathrooms, kitchens, swimming pools of resorts, water parks, etc.  Another purpose is to prevent an overload on a specific circuit, thus, preventing accidents like fire, etc.

Detect a current imbalance

An RCBO will detect a current imbalance and an overload using the same interrupting method. They call it a ‘trip’. It works almost the same as Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCIs), cutting off the current when ground fault happens or when there is any current imbalance, thereby, protecting our lives. If current flow is not equal, it means that there is a current leakage to the ground, which could possibly mean someone is touching or has accidentally touched the live conductor of an appliance as they are attempting to use it, in this case, the RCBO will break the circuit or trip.

Ratedd both by the normal current that are expected to carry, and the maximum residual current that they can safely interrupt

RCBOs are rated both by the normal current that are expected to carry, and the maximum residual current that they can safely interrupt also known as the sensitivity rating. It is also designed to interrupt a current overload in a circuit. This may happen when more appliances are being used beyond the rated current. A short circuit is an abnormal low resistance connection between two wires of electrical power to any circuit. A good example is when the cables of your electrical appliances are worn out and the live wires are connected improperly. This too can be detected by the RCBO.

Meiji Electric offers you RCBOs of high quality performance

Meiji Electric offers you RCBOs of high quality performance that would surely protect your life from deadly electrical harms. Meiji RCBOs have rated currents of 3, 6, 10, 16, 20, 25 and 32 Amperes. They also have a short circuit interrupting capacity of 3000 Amperes. Meiji RCBOs have sensitivity ratings of 30 mA, 100 mA and 300 mA with very safe levels of interruption. When this level of sensitivity is detected by the RCBO, it will automatically trip and will break the circuit to prevent further damages. Meiji RCBO has a built-in test button, and should be tested monthly to make sure it is functioning properly.

All houses and offices have the possibility of experiencing current imbalance

We cannot escape the fact that we might get killed with these electrical problems. Having this information, we realize the importance of using an RCBO, and should consider it to be a “must have”.

For some simple electric precautions, you don’t have to spend money for an expert’s service. We, in Meiji Electric, shall continue to enhance energy, to help you understand electrical safety measures, and provide an easy and convenient way for your overall safety.

How to be Immune from Electric Shocks

There was a recent report about a teenage girl who died after being electrocuted in a pool area at a condominium in Mandaluyong City.

7b6ab900-e211-11e3-aa5c-3f5178e2780d_630tvpatrol_gatewayregencypool

The victim and her two siblings were swimming in the pool area inside a condominium last Tuesday night when the incident happened. She came out of the water to transfer to another pool but then she was electrocuted. Her two siblings were also hurt by the electric current but they survived. According to them, they were not aware of the live wire near the pool as there were no warning signs and lifeguards. The girl moved from one pool to another where she was electrocuted and died on the spot.

May this incident once again serve as a reminder that in commercial establishments or even in industrial companies which involves wet working areas, we should be more cautious to prevent accidents such as these.

Philippine Electric Code (PEC)

Proclaimed Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) installation as one of the standards and safety precautions we should follow. Having a GFCI set up is a remedy to these situations because of its safety features and practical usage.

Swimming pools that are designed with colorful lights can be dangerous as they involve electricity. Setting up your swimming pool with residual current breakers provides safety and protection for the people from deadly electric shocks.

Meiji Residual Current Circuit Breaker with Over-current (RCBO)

A circuit control that is very suitable for wet areas as it acquires accurate ground fault circuit interrupting feature. It’s a breaker that every commercial establishment should have. It automatically shuts off an electric circuit when it detects a current flow along an unintended path, possibly through water or by human body.

Meiji RCBO

Meiji RCBOs can protect electrical system against ground faults, overload, over-voltage and short circuit. We also recommend Meiji RCBOs to be enclosed with NEMA standardized Meiji Panel Enclosures which can cover the breakers from elements like dusts and corrosive particles.

Similarly, homes can be immune electric shocks as Meiji has now innovated a GFCI outlet.

Meiji GFCI outlets are protective outlets designed to shut off an electric circuit when it detects current imbalance. Meiji GFCI outlets are usually installed in wet places like kitchen, bathrooms and pool areas. Many opt to use it for electronic devices such as shavers and hair dryers which are normally placed inside the bathroom.

meiji-gfci

Meiji GFCI outlets, GF-250 (220V), LG-20 (110V) and the new MGF 250 are UL and CSA certified. These can be set up easily since they can be installed as ordinary wall outlets. Hence, you can simply plug-in your device without difficulty. GF-250 and LG-20 are duplex outlets with 20 ampere capacity which is enough to plug in 2 devices at the same time.

MGF 250 is rated at 20 amperes and 250V with a combination of international and universal outlets which can accommodate any type of plug.

These three have a safety test button to make sure that the ground fault detection feature is working properly.

Meiji GFCIs are of polycarbonate glossy white finish that brings style to your home!

As our country goes with the advancement in homes and commercial establishments, safety precautions and standards should be paid more attention to avoid life threatening accidents. With Meiji GFCI, be protected with fatal electric shocks.

Ways on How You Can Upgrade a Circuit Breaker

In this modern world, circuit breakers are becoming more of a requirement than a nondescript accessory in a home. For all security and safety reasons, circuit breakers is a must-have mechanism to prevent hazards like fires and problems related to electrical current as they function to cut off power when the load surmount to higher than normal. In this article, we will discuss the steps on how to upgrade the circuit breaker.

Friendly Note: If you’re an inexperienced electrician, doing the steps yourself at home might pose some danger, so it would be better if you can call out a professional or ask somehow who has been trained and equipped with skills to accomplish the steps.

Here are the requirements to complete the action: upgraded circuit breaker, wire strippers and electric service panel.

Ways on How You Can Upgrade a Circuit Breaker

1.     First is to inspect the service panel to check the connections of the outlets and switches to the circuits control. This is also to know if your home is wired with sufficient power for your appliances and electrical devices when they are plugged to one or multiple circuits. If the area is too dim, bring a flashlight and/or portable lighting equipment or turn on a light bulb for proper illumination.

2.    Notice the peak loads on the circuit and take the measurement of everything that is connected to that circuit. If you see that the load is not enough, you may be required to have additional circuits. But note that adding such requires permission from the building or house and coordination with your electrician for closer inspection.

3.       Know the full capacity of the circuit and compare the number with the one existing in your circuit’s load. Then determine the electric service that is needed to do the upgrade. Anything above 150 amperes to 400 amperes, for instance, may not be accepted – this is a case to case basis.

4.       Once decided, carefully remove the main breaker and main service panel and disconnect existing circuits from the panel. The electric utility provider must be informed that they shut off the service in the meantime while the upgrade is ongoing.

5.       Bring in the new circuit breakers and install them into the available slots on the service panel.

6.       Connect the new circuit breaker to the circuits respectively through the wires.

7.       When the wires of the circuit are connected successfully to the breaker with secured assembly, call the electric utility provider once again. This time, inform them that they can restore power in your home.

circuit breakersWrap Up

As noted above, you can follow these instructions by yourself only if you have some skills and experience to switch and upgrade into a new circuit breaker. If not, it’s best not to compromise on safety and let the electricians do the work for you as the task may be dangerous.
