Every year, the country is hit by an average of 20 typhoons. Unfortunately, these calamities can wreak havoc on virtually everything that plugs into the walls, putting you at higher risk for power surges and power outages. Fortunately, you can easily purchase surge protectors like the AVR in the Philippines to save your appliances. To help increase your knowledge on how to save your electronics, here are some tips on how to protect your electronics when the inevitable happens.

Get Insured

Since we’re talking about dangerous storms here, let’s be honest—nothing is absolutely guaranteed to keep you or your possessions safe from the act of nature, so to be sure, better get yourself insured. There are general insurance plans that can cover and protect your electronics in the event of an electrical surge or lighting. There are also electrical repair businesses you can go to once the unfortunate happen and in case your beloved electronics gets damaged, you can bring them to these kinds of shops. Some specific equipment have their own warranty, so it would be best to keep the receipts and booklets of your appliances to save on money.

Invest in UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply)

A UPS is a device that allows computers to run when a brownout occurs but only for short time. It also protects the computer from power surges. The rechargeable battery enables the UPS to take over powering your device so you can be sure that whatever you were working on will be safe because sudden shutoffs won’t be a factor of you losing your work. Some UPS’s also have functions that include guaranteed surge protection which serves as temporary warranty for anything plugged into the UPS system.

Invest in Surge Protectors

Surge protectors are designed to protect your electrical devices from voltage spikes. It also limits the voltage supplied to an electrical device by blocking it or grounding the unwanted voltage to a safe threshold. A surge protector is one of the most important things you should invest in especially if you have expensive electronics. Usual and unexpected surges can be easily blocked by surge protectors but lighting can still get past it if it strikes close enough or directly.

Unplug All Devices

The most effective defense is to unplug all of your devices and appliances if you know a storm is brewing.  If your computer, television or refrigerator or just about all the electrical appliances you have isn’t plugged in, then there is a lesser chance for it to be struck by electrical damage. Unplugging them is the best method we can use and as much as we hate it, it’s the only sure way for them to be protected from surges or lightning strikes.

Mother Nature is fierce and dangerous; she holds forces that can damage your electronics. Take caution and by using the tips aforementioned, you can be sure that your expensive electronics can be safe from harm and no lightning strike can easily harm them.

It’s no secret that one of the biggest concerns homeowners have, or at least should have, is how to make everything in your household last as long as it could. Some people think in order to save, you must purchase cheap appliances. Others think it would be better to buy the more expensive appliances in order for them to last. But here’s a little secret: a higher price doesn’t always mean longer life expectancy.

Good guy electrical suppliers in the Philippines will tell you that in most cases, the longevity of appliances, gadgets, or any item depends on its usage!

Don’t believe us? Try out these tips to help maintain your home appliances!

Keep Them Inside and Away from Windows

Place your home appliances anywhere but right beside or in front of the windows, especially if the windows are often wide open or there are no curtains. This will keep them safe from direct sunlight which can overheat any piece of machinery. Worst case scenario is that it gets rained on and damages the equipment!

Regularly Clean Your Appliances

Your appliances may differ from each other in many ways, but all of them need to be cleaned regularly. For example, cleaning the base grill of your refrigerator often will help improve air flow to its components. Dust off the compressor coils at least once every six months in order for it to cool your refrigerator efficiently. In addition, wipe down the refrigerator door seals whenever they get sticky. According to Ryan Huntley of RepairClinic.com, a thin layer of petroleum jelly on the seals will make them last longer. Don’t forget to remove, clean, and return the drip tray every couple of months.

As for microwaves, don’t leave the food particles in there for too long. These particles can turn into carbon, which can cause electrical sparking that can damage your appliance. One way to clean the inside of the microwave is by heating up a glass of water (microwave-safe glass of course), and wait for the water to boil. The steam will help soften and loosen the food particles inside. Afterwards, use a cloth, dishwashing soap and water to clean remove the food residue.

The filters in air conditioners need to be cleaned every 225 to 360 hours of use—that is, around every 9 to 15 days of operation. Use a damp cloth and soap to clean off the filters.

Don’t Overuse Any Appliance

Appliances are technically slaves to its owners, but they shouldn’t be treated as such. Keeping your house in tip-top shape is a joint effort, meaning you shouldn’t skimp on your share of the workload! For starters, never overload the washing machine in an effort to hasten the laundry washing process up. This is likely to wear out the unit’s motor and drive belts. There will always be a maximum capacity recommended by its manufacturers, depending on the appliance, which should be followed. The same goes for dryers.

If you follow these tips, there is a higher chance you’ll be able to use your home appliances for a little bit longer. If you have comments, suggestions, or stories to tell, don’t forget to share it in the comment box below!

When you have an AVR in the Philippines, you definitely want to keep it and the rest of your home safe when you leave for a few days to go on vacation. Some people just ‘wing it’, leaving everything up to the last minute, but it will be very beneficial for you to make plans ahead. Create a checklist of all the things you need to do before leaving the house. Here are a few tips on what you need to accomplish before driving off to enjoy your vacation.

Make Sure All Appliances are Turned Off

It is surprising how many people overlook turning off all appliances in the house by not checking their homes thoroughly. Yes, even your Wi-Fi needs to be turned off (sorry, neighbors). Please do not leave your desktop or laptop on and plugged in with the intent of letting it download large files. This is to avoid gadgets, appliances, or lights from overheating or blowing a fuse.  The only thing you should leave on is your refrigerator, to keep the food in it from going bad.

Unplug Everything

Again, except for the refrigerator, unplug the rest of your appliances. With you and everyone else in the family out of the house, there really is no need for anything to be plugged in anyway. This will prevent power surges and save energy. Many appliances use up power even when they are turned off.

Do NOT Leave Your Pet without Food or Water

As much as possible, we advocate not leaving any pet behind when you’re going on vacation. However, there are times when it is inevitable.

Even if your pet cat is free roaming, never assume that they will be able to find sufficient food and water on their own, especially if they’ve been fed regularly their whole life. Allowing your pet to scavenge for food can also put them at risk of getting lost, acquiring diseases, or worse, getting run over. For large pets staying inside such as a dog or cat, don’t lock them in a cage; the least you can do is to keep them in a safe room. The room must not trap heat and must be well ventilated. Make sure there are no wires, gadgets, or appliances they can chew on or knock over. Leave a bathroom area for the pet  and keep their food and water a good distance from the said place.

It would still be better to leave your pet with someone you trust who will take care of them during the duration of your vacation, or at least ask your neighbor to check up on them daily. Do note that you must NEVER leave your pet alone for more than a couple of days.

Make it Look like Someone’s Home

Regarding curtains, your first instinct might be to close them all the way to prevent people from seeing the inside. However, noticeable changes like this can alert a thief that this was done because the owners have left the house vacant. Keep the curtains as is. You might be tempted to leave the lights on in an effort to make it look like there is someone inside but this can rack up a large electric bill, is not very environmental-friendly, and is even more suspicious! You can purchase a light switch timer that will turn the switch on and off according to the time it is programmed to do so.

Have Your Mail Put on Hold

If you’re expecting any mail, ask someone to pick it up for you or inform your courier of your absence and to hold your mail for the meantime. Parcels might easily be stolen off your garage, and piled up mail is a clear signal that there is nobody home!

If you have a spare key, make sure you keep it somewhere so hidden that even the person who knows there is a spare key will have a hard time looking for it. Follow these steps in keeping your home safe and you’ll be able to have a fun vacation without any worries!

electricity measurement wiring meijiElectricity can be measured and controlled. It circles around three basic factors: voltage, current, and resistance. Each of these measurements are quantified and has their respective units. So before you go looking for home appliances and wiring devices in the Philippines and elsewhere, you better know this stuff first. Read on below!

Voltage (V)

Voltage is the force that pushes the electrons in the wires from one point to another. In short, it is the difference in electric charge between two places.

For example, you have two clumps of metals, one loaded with electrons and the other not so much. Using a conductor, you can connect these two clumps to transfer some electrons to the second clump. But you won’t be able to do that fast enough without voltage! You see, electrons in its natural state freely move between atoms, but they do so randomly. By using voltage, you can nudge them all to move in a single direction.

Voltage is measured in volts or V, after Alessandro Volta, an Italian physicist who possibly invented the first chemical battery with his voltaic pile. You can find out the exact amount of voltage in wires using a device called voltmeter.

Current (I)

Current, on the other hand, is the rate of flow of the electric charge in the wire. While voltage is the force that pushes the electrons to move from one atom to the next, current is the factor that enables them to flow through the conductor.

To better understand how current works, line up 15 balls in a pool table in a straight line and hit the one in front with the cue ball. As you’ll see, doing that will cause the ball at the rear to move. Something similar happens in current flow. Electrons move from one atom to another, displacing electrons from the second atom which will then move to a third atom to displace the electrons there. And on it goes!

Current is measured in amperes or A, in honor of French mathematician, physicist and well-known father of electrodynamics André-Marie Ampère. One ampere is equivalent to around 6,240 quadrillion electrons per second, and it can be measured using an ammeter.

Resistance (R)

Resistance, however, restricts the passage of electric current through the conductor. In short, it controls how many electrons can go through the wire. It’s an important factor in electricity, as too much electric current yield too output power, which may cause damage to various electric and electronic devices.

Resistance is created by adding a component known as resistors, a device made from an amalgamation of conductors and insulators. Due to its nature, it only allows a certain amount of current to pass through it, thereby controlling how much can flow to the output section of the system.

Resistance is measured in Ohms or Ω, after German mathematician and physicist Georg Simon Ohm, who is best known for his law on the relationship of current with voltage and resistance (Ohm’s Law).

Knowing these three factors is extremely important, especially since they affect the amount of electricity flowing in and around your home’s electric system as well as determine the power it could give your appliances and devices. So better learn it!

One might say that Ian Fleming’s legacy, the James Bond series, has been one of the most popular fictional espionage stories, as well as the template for fictional spies in some of today’s media. It’s about British Secret Service agent James Bond, famously known as 007, and his missions to save the world.

The action, suspense, thrill, and the occasional romance are just some of the reasons why James Bond is loved by anyone, regardless of age. With the advancements in technology like motion sensors already available in the Philippines or locked-room escape games, it is no wonder why James Bond is who people channel to finish a game.

But Bond is not the only fictional spy you can watch in action. If you are one of many Bond fans, here is a list of spy films that are perfect you.

the spy who came in from the cold

The Spy Who Came in from the Cold (1965)

The 1960’s was an era where military tension was palpable between powerful nations. It was no surprise that spy films have come to adopt this as an effective plot device. The film The Spy Who Came in from the Cold War is based on a book of the same title written by John le Carré. The protagonist, Alec Leamas, is very much unlike James Bond. He doesn’t have the sophistication Bond seems to exude; instead, his manner is very straightforward. He shows contempt both for his enemies and for his job. Unlike James Bond who relies on gadgets, he makes use of skill and cunning to get out of a situation.

The Quiller Memorandum (1966)

The Quiller Memorandum is based on a spy novel written by Trevor Dudley-Smith called The Berlin Memorandum. It’s also set in the Cold War era where agent Quiller was sent to Berlin to investigate a neo-Nazi organization. This spy, just like Alec Leamas from The Spy Who Came in from the Cold, is not like Bond. He doesn’t like guns, believing that it gives a person a false sense of security. He relies on wit and his knowledge of the martial arts. The film depicts what undercover missions can do to a man.

roniin movie

Ronin (1998)

The story follows the story of ex-special operatives turned mercenaries who were hired to steal a suspiciously heavily guarded package, wanted by the Russians and the IRA. It has every element that you expect in a spy film: loads of dialogue, thrilling car chases, and action-packed scenes. However, one its appeals isn’t in their treatment of the spy film formula, but of the use of practical effects. The car chases were done practically, none of the visual effects that are overused in today’s films.

body of lies

Body of Lies (2008)

The film is based on the novel of the same name written by David Ignatius. The story is set in the Middle East where the CIA and the Jordanian Intelligence were looking to catch a jihadist by the name of Al Saleem. Roger Ferris, a lone ranger type, concocted a plan that involved making up a fictional rival terrorist organization and use it to get to Al Saleem.

Farewell (2009)

A French espionage film originally titled L’affaire Farewell, literally The Farewell Affair, was adapted from the novel Bonjour Farewell: La vérité sur la taupe française du KGB by Serguei Kostine. It follows the story of a high-ranking KGB officer and a Frenchman who smuggled Soviet Secrets to the United States, hoping to end military tensions between powerful nations. As you may have already guessed from the plot, it’s set in the Cold War. The film was applauded not just because of how it’s written, but also because of its beautiful and striking cinematography.

Recent films that you might want to check out are Kingsman: The Secret Service (2015) and The Man from U.N.C.L.E (2015), which shows us that spy shouldn’t always follow the same the formula, that they can deviate to gallows humour that a lot of people are starting to appreciate nowadays.

The films listed above are some of the most recommended spy films that are perfect, not just for the avid Bond film, but also for those wanting a rush of adrenaline.

Fathers’ special day is soon to come. Spend time with him this coming Sunday! Here are some activities that will surely make your dad smile from ear to ear.

dadsonWatch movies together

Movie watching with your dad could be a great bonding for the two of you as most dads are fond of action movies. Watching movies especially on flat screen TVs would make your movie watching feel like a home theater setting. Flat screen TVs are all the rage these days and come in all sizes. They come in LED, Plasma, or LCD models, depending on your preferences. Make sure to do this with snacks on your lap!

MicrowaveovenCook for him

Dad will appreciate easy to cook recipes and healthy meals that are prepared by their kids. You could use a microwave oven or an induction cooker to make healthy and delicious dishes.

rocking dadRock and roll with your Dad

Using your sound components, may it be musical instruments, speakers, amplifiers or even a vintage record player, you can make him sing every Sunday morning or after office hours particularly this coming Father’s Day. Whatever genre of music he enjoys, make him feel relaxed or join the beat.

article-0-1C64745600000578-99_634x422Exercise Together

Have a Sunday work-out using an electronic treadmill or an exercise bike. Nothing like a day of cardio exercise and burning those unwanted excess fat keep dad strong and healthy. It’s sure to make both of you happy and energized for the rest of the day.

workshop-hell-do-better-than-me-one-dayExtend a help in the garage

Support your dad in repairing damaged appliances, chairs and tables, and other broken stuffs at home not by interfering on his works but by simply cleaning his tools and devices. Wipe his old-aged electric drill, planer, saw, etc. You could also learn from these tools and use them when you grow older.

All these activities include devices that most likely came from abroad and are being sold here in the Philippines. Since, we have a different voltage supply here in our country which is 220 volts; we have to transform the voltage supply to what the equipment requires. Whatever imported gadget you choose to give to your dad, make sure to incorporate it with Meiji Step-down Transformer.

Meiji Step-down Transformers are designed to accurately make the voltage supply compatible with the voltage requirement of the appliance. Step-down transformers “step down” the voltage supply to match the smaller voltage requirement of the appliance. Typically, the voltage used in most homes is 220V to 110V; as a result, the typical step-down transformer converts 220V to 110V.

Plugging your flat screen TV on 110V outlet allows your equipment to have an input of 110V thus making it function properly as the required voltage is being supplied. Just be careful not to exceed the wattage capacity. Do the same to other imported appliances you have in your home. In this way, your dad will conveniently enjoy the time you spent on each other and could buy you something in return!

Happy Fathers’ Day!

meiji-transformersA transformer is needed to change the voltage of the power supply to meet the needs of specific appliances or machines.  According to Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary, transformer is a device that changes the voltage of an electric current. What most people are unaware of, there are two types of transformers, the Step-down and Step- up Transformers. The difference between these two is very tricky, but the necessity to know it is very important. Wrong usage of your step-up or down transformer might affect and destroy our hard-earned appliances and worst it might cause serious problems especially to our families. Let me give you a scenario:

You plugged your 110V type of appliance, your LED television for instance, to your 220V outlet using a step-up transformer, what do you think could happen? Yes, it would immediately damage your appliance or worse this might root to a serious problem that will put your family’s safety at stake. Too dangerous to risk!

So you might be asking now, what is the real difference between a Step-down and a Step-up Transformer?

Step-down Transformers

Step- down transformers are designed to reduce electrical voltage. It has less wire turns in the secondary. Thus, decreases voltage. For instance, here in the Philippines, we have 220V electric supply. But since we have relatives or friends abroad who send us appliances that requires 110V supply, there is a need to use a Step down Transformer. Using a step-down transformer actually means that the voltage has been “stepped down”. Please refer to the diagram.transformer diagram

The 220V electric supply in the Philippines is being lowered to 110V, which is required by your appliance. Input is 220V and output is 110V. That is how a Step-down transformer works.

Step-up Transformers

On the other hand, a step-up transformer is used when the secondary voltage is greater than the primary voltage. It has more wire turns in the secondary. The common usage of it is a starter of an electric motor. It takes a lot of voltage to initially start the motor’s turning. A step up transformer is also needed to use a 220v product in a country with 110v supply. In other words, the voltage has been “stepped up”. As you can see in the diagram, input is 110V and output is 220V. That is the main purpose of a Step-up Transformer.step-up-transformer

So there you have it, the difference between a Step-down transformer and a Step-up Transformer.  It is better not to be so confused with the two or else you might regret the consequences, right?
