Electrical Company Philippines

February is the month of hearts and love, when all couples are preparing for their Valentine’s Day.  They want this day to be a special one, and look forward to making memories with their loved ones.  Couples often go on dates and vacation, others spend their day at the park, while some book overnight stays at hotels. Many people also spend the day with their family, parents, siblings or their children. February is really a great month to express your love to everyone.

Meiji Electric also wants to express their love to customers. Here are some tips on buying electrical items that may help you make this love month worry-free.

BUYING LIGHT SWITCHES

If you are able to identify the designs and types of light switches around your house, it will be easier for you to choose the right kind of switch for your lights. There are some basic types of switches that you might want to take note of. For example, there is a single pole switch that is simply an On-Off toggle to turn on lights. The Three Way Switch allows you to turn lights on or off from two locations and the Dimmer Switch allows you to find the ideal amount of light for any setting.

BUYING OUTLETS

Before buying outlets, you must first check the type of plug you usually use in your house. Some types are: International Outlet, Universal outlet, Convenience outlet with or without grounding and Air Conditioning Outlets. There are also different types of outlets in different countries, for example, in the US they use three prong outlets that are different from European countries. Here in the Philippines, the typical outlet that is used is the Convenience Outlet.

BUYING EXTENSION SETS

There are many kinds of extension sets with various number of sockets and plug-types, some even have USB functions. In choosing for your appliances, you must consider the following:

First, how long your extension set will be? Try to determine the location of the outlet around your house, this will help you decide on the length of extension set that you will need.

Second is the voltage and ampere rating, you must always know the capacity of each appliance before you plug it into your extension set. This is to avoid overloading that may cause short-circuit and fire.

Lastly is the safety feature of the extension set, like the Meiji Power Strips, it has a built-in fuse and surge protection for better protection against sudden electrical overload.

KEY TAKEAWAY

If you cannot decide on which type of switch or outlet you want to use, better ask a trusted electrician. The main priority of buying electrical devices is the safety of your family and everyone around.  Do not just blindly choose whatever is cheap, you wouldn’t know if it is faulty and can cause inconvenience for you. Better rely on an Electrical Company that is trusted by many, like Meiji Electric Philippines Inc.

Which Meiji Electric extension should you use in your home?

  1. MES-3011 collection
  2. MES-2027 collection
  3. MES-1300 collection
  4. MES-1400 collection
Among the many electrical suppliers in Metro Manila, Meiji Electric is the one that’s at the forefront of innovation, particularly when it comes to efficient and safe electrical devices. That being said, you should be careful with the many devices that you buy and install in your home. Although there are many that promise safety and efficiency, it’s not practical for you to only rely on what they claim.Often, you’ll find yourself spoiled with choices when it comes to deciding which electrical device to pick. Because of this, the tendency is for you to choose the first one you find, the cheapest one, or the one recommended by the salesperson. That being said, you should never settle for anything. Even just choosing which extension set you’ll pick should be treated as an important decision. Not all extension sets are made the same way. In a typical hardware store, you’re going to see numerous brands and kinds of extension cords. Some look no different from the rest, while others have specific features inlaid to them. The bottom line is, not every kind of extension cord is efficiently used in every kind of home. Sometimes, it’s better to be precise and choose specific kinds of extension sets for your home.To provide more context, here’s a short discussion on Meiji Electric’s line of extension sets and where they’ll be used efficiently.

MES-3011 Collection

MES-3011 CollectionThis is an extension set with a 3-meter cord and 3 outlets at the end. There’s one outlet on one side, and two outlets on the other for better accessibility. These are the simplest extension cords that you can get. The outlets are placed this way to allow for at least 2 complicated plugs to be placed without covering up the other outlets. Its 3-meter length lets it extend to a sizable area, perfect for living rooms that have appliances placed in the middle, away from wall sockets.

MES-2027 Collection

MES-2027 CollectionThese extension sets also have three outlets at the end. The difference is that the outlets are placed side-by-side. This collection also comes in 3-meter, 5-meter, and 10-meter variants. These are made of polycarbonate ABS plastic material which helps bring out a glossy, clean, and modern look. This is the extension cord that you will typically see in most homes. It looks and feels simple. It’s best used in applications wherein the plug of the appliance doesn’t need an adaptor. This is because the layout of the outlets almost ensures that another outlet will be taken up. That doesn’t mean it can’t be used for such applications, however. This extension set has the most versatility when it comes to its reach. With 3, 5, and 10-meter cords, you can use it for your living room, or as a temporary extension for housework and even construction projects at home!

MES-1300 Collection

This series of extension sets are polarized, durable, and safe. They come with three to six international outlets that each have their own switch and fuse. The fuse is there to protect whatever is plugged in from sudden surges that exceed its limit as well as other faults. The MES-1300 collection also has a built-in circuit breaker that fortifies the protection of your high-rated appliances. On the off-chance that it trips, you can be sure that it’s a warning sign that your appliance might be experiencing electrical faults or problems. Lastly, this series is made up of copper bars in order to be more functional than your typical extension sets. These kinds of extension sets are best used in areas where there are a variety of different appliances that need individual protection. An example of places where it’s best used is a home office. You have your computer, monitor, printer, scanner, and many other appliances that would need to be plugged in accordingly.Because of the safety and reliability of this extension set—it can also be used in offices where multiple computers, laptops, and other appliances need to be plugged in for people to work.

MES-1400 Collection

MES-1400 CollectionThis series of extension cords have the most variety in Meiji’s inventory. These extension sets can be used for different purposes and applications.MES-1400 and MES-1401 is an extension set in the form of a disc that has six international outlets and two USB charging ports. They come with 3-meter and 5-meter cords respectively. MES-1402 is a smaller version of the 1300 series. It only has two outlets and two USB ports. MES-1404 is a rounded cube with four international outlets and four USB ports; and MES 1405 is an extension cord that only has four USB charging ports. In essence, each of these extension sets has a specific niche it can fill. They are all reliable and safe to use. With the recent prominence of USB cord-based charging cables for phones, Meiji Electric extension sets have made it easier than ever before to supply power to your devices. You can just plug your charging cable straight into the USB ports found in these extension cords instead of using a bulky and cumbersome adaptor.

Key Takeaway

Seldom will you see an electrical supplier in Metro Manila undergo a number of innovations and come up with amazing products just like Meiji Electric. That being said, you should understand that although extension sets are primarily used to extend the reach of outlets, they’re also made to make plugging in appliances more convenient for the customers.

What are the dos and don’ts of using an extension cord?

  1. Do use the right type of extension cord
  2. Do inspect for damage before use
  3. Do place them in safe places
  4. Do buy those with a built-in circuit breaker
  5. Don’t plug them into one another
  6. Don’t overload with several appliances
  7. Don’t put them under rugs and carpets
  8. Don’t use as a substitute for permanent wiring

Extension cords – also known as extension sets – have become such a necessity for households and office spaces that it’s come to the point where it’d be difficult to perform important tasks without them. Useful and convenient as they are, many people aren’t aware of the fact that they pose threats and hazards if they weren’t used properly. Any electrical company in the Philippines would agree with us when we say that extension cord safety is under-prioritized even though it is an equally important aspect of electrical precaution.

When people are asked about electrical devices that could possibly cause electrical hazards, extension cords aren’t among the top answers. Usually, people would mention plugs, outlets, appliances, light fixtures, and such. While it’s great to be wary of these things, it’s important to keep in mind that extension cords pose the same hazards.

Misuse of extension cords has always been one of the top causes of electrical fires around the world. Some may find this bewildering but there are right and wrong ways to use extension cords. We have both listed below, so continue reading to find out more!

Do Use the Right Type of Extension Cord

Do Use the Right Type of Extension Cord

Extension cords come in a surprisingly wide variety of types that may be difficult for anyone to memorize. The most basic categories are light-duty, medium-duty, heavy-duty, indoor, and outdoor.

Some are also assigned a certain letter that shows what they can and should be used for. An extension cord that is labeled ‘S’ means that it is a general-use cord for indoor spaces, while ‘W’ means it is for the outdoors.

You can find information like this on the packaging, so make sure to check for those and match the description to the intended use.

Do Inspect for Damage Before Use

Much like what you would do for any electrical device, make it a habit to inspect the extension cord for damage before you plug them in.

Check the plug, the cord, and the actual body of the device for anything that could disrupt the flow of electricity whether that’s small food crumbs, dirt, or physical damage. Even if the cord is newly-purchased, you should still do a quick inspection to be extra safe.

Do Place them in Safe Places

Always place your extension cords somewhere you can see them so that you’d immediately be able to notice any signs of damage. It’s also ideal for them to be placed in low-traffic spaces so that people don’t accidentally trip on them. More importantly, avoid placing them in areas where water is a threat (e.g. kitchen and bathroom).

Do Buy Those with A Built-In Circuit Breaker

If used properly, extension cords should not pose any kind of threat to you and your family. But in order to get that extra layer of protection, you should buy ones that come with a built-in circuit breaker. The circuit breaker is incorporated into the cord in order to protect your home and appliances from the dangers of electrical shorts and faults.

Don’t Plug Them into One Another

Don’t Plug Them into One Another

Never plug extension cords into one another to extend their reach. Many people are guilty of this and we highly suggest that you stop this practice because it’s not safe for you or your devices.

When you connect an extension cord to another, the electrical current and gauge flowing through are reduced. This means that the devices plugged in are going to receive insufficient voltage and this can possibly shorten their life. If the length of the cord isn’t sufficient, then we suggest you purchase a longer one instead.

Don’t Overload with Several Appliances

It’s easy to overload an extension cord because they often come with three or four plug outlets. However, keep in mind that every cord was made to withstand a certain load and it is important to stay within the limits. Exceeding this recommended load is going to lead to power surges that may cause electrical hazards and damage your devices.

In order to avoid this, you should know the amperage and wattage of the appliances you intend to plug in; make sure the overall sum is within the load capacity of the extension cord.

Don’t Put Them Under Rugs and Carpets

People love to hide their extension cords under rugs and carpets to keep them from being eyesores but we are strongly against this. Placing them under a rug, carpet, sofa or bed prevents them from releasing their heat which can lead to overheating, electrical fire, or both.

When you hide them, you might not be able to spot trouble before they could happen. Also, people are more likely to step on them, causing them possible injuries.

Don’t Use as Substitute for Permanent Wiring

Don’t Use as Substitute for Permanent Wiring

Extension cords are only supposed to be temporary solutions for your wiring problems and should never be a permanent addition to the electrical system of your household or office. Continuous use is guaranteed to deteriorate the parts of the cord, opening up opportunities for dangerous electrical shocks and fires. If you have an extension cord that is plugged in a wall outlet 24/7, then you may want to consider having your home or office rewired or moving your appliances around.

Key Takeaway

As one of the leading electrical companies in the Philippines, we highly advise Filipinos to practice extension cord safety. The guidelines posted above should help you determine what you should and shouldn’t do when it comes to extension cords. Educate yourself so you can be assured of your safety at home or in the office.

Ever wondered why some plugs have 2 prongs while others have 3? Well, it is all about safety!  Electricity must flow in an uninterrupted circuit. Electrocutions often occur in homes due to defective products, such as appliances, power tools, and improper wiring. Children are particularly susceptible to electrocution not only because of their never ending curiosity but also because they can sense an electrical current as low as 0.006A (6mA). Faulty installations or repairs can also result in electrocution and are a primary cause of electrical accidents at home.

0922 Desc

Take a look at your home outlets for instance, the right smaller slot is for the HOT wire, this is where electricity comes from; the left wider slot is for the neutral wire, this wire completes the circuit and feeds the electricity back into the system.

Implement this idea into a larger power distribution system and you’ve created a huge problem. If excess voltage is applied to the circuit, like a lightning for example, all the excess energy must travel through your electrical network, potentially exploding everything connected to it. To prevent this, a third ground wire is connected straight to your breaker enclosure and is driven straight to the earth. Now when a lightning strikes into your system, the excess energy is directed into the land instead, but we have now created another problem. Before all of this, the only way to be shocked is when you touched both the neutral and hot wires, in that case your body would close the electrical circuit and the voltage would travel through you, from one wire to the other. Now, because of grounding, half of the electrical system is always indirectly connected to you, through your feet. Meaning you only need to touch a single wire or a metal object electrified by one to become an unfortunate circuit. This is why some appliances have the third prong. It is a safety feature for devices with metal cases. It protects the items from wear and tear, aging and faulty manufacturing. A hot wire from within the appliance could come loose and make contact with the metallic case, without the 3rd prong, you could be lethally shocked when touching it. Appliances with this third prong have a wire that connects directly from the metallic case and back to the outlet. Voltage along this path would trip the breaker and cut off the electricity that could potentially kill you.

Meiji Items with Grounding

Electrical Safety with Meiji Products

Prevent serious injury or an accident from happening in your home by using Meiji GFCI’s, AVRS (Automatic Voltage Regulator), UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply), Wiring Devices, Extension Sets, and Timers which all have grounding or 3rd prongs.  The whole family of Meiji Electric’s GFCI’s MGU252MGF250GF250 and LG20 are classified as Class A in accordance with UL943. This is because all Meiji Electric GFCI’s have a 6mA sensitivity rating, unlike other GFCIs being sold in the markets which only have 15mA rating or even higher. UL Standard indicates the `let go factor’ of women and children should not be more than 6mA sensitivity rating because anything above this range is where `freezing currents’ start and it may not be possible to `let go.’ The Meiji GFCI is different from conventional receptacles, because in the event of a ground fault, it automatically trips, and stops the flow of electricity to your body, thus preventing serious injury. Meiji GFCI’s will work even without a grounded wire, even if a utility box isn’t grounded, installing a GFCI in it will still protect you (and your tools and appliances) from ground faults. The Electrical Code requires installing a GFCI for all wet areas, this is necessary to avoid ground fault which happens when electricity passes through our wet body before it reaches the ground.

UB-252

Our newest addition is the MGU252, the only square GFCI with a combination of 1 international outlet and 2 USB outlets. It is designed for ease of use with all USB-dependent gadgets and devices while protecting you in wet prone areas. For your convenience, we will be giving a FREE custom-made 3’’x 3’’ utility box UB-252 so you don’t need to worry on where to get one.

So the next time you see that 3rd prong, just remember that it could save your life! Call us at 448-7423, 727-5790, 414-4012 and 413-6636 or email us at sales@meijielectric.ph for your various electrical requirements! It’s school time again! With the start of school, families face new organization challenges. The kids probably feel excited and maybe a little sad that summer is over, some kids feel nervous or a little scared on their first day of school. Early morning alarm clocks, homework and projects are just some things to expect. Get organized now for the new school year ahead. Use these ideas to prepare your home and family for the busy days ahead.

Sleep

  1. TCV003 Meiji Aircon to Fan TimerThe first day of school is no time for a drastic adjustment of household sleep schedules. Instead, ease children back into a school year routine gradually. By this time, late sleepers should wake up earlier, closer to the hour they’ll need to rise when school begins. An alternative way to help them wake up is to set your aircon to turn off at an earlier time. Use the Meiji Aircon to Fan Timer TCV003 to automatically set your aircon to turn off at a specific time and your electric fan to turn on immediately after. It allows you to plug-in your air conditioner and electric fan in one unit with its international and universal outlet with 4400W and 20A load capacity. This way your children will wake up earlier and you save energy at the same time.

Meal Times

  1. Don’t neglect meal times! Younger children, in particular, need to adapt to new meal routines before the school day demands it of them. Plan and prepare them fresh fruits and balanced meals to get them energized throughout the day.

School Supplies

  1. School supplies should already be bought by now. Label your entire children’s belongings so it can be returned to them when it gets misplaced.

Meiji UPS

Organize

4. Take some time to clean and organize a place for studying. Avoid too much clutter that can make kids feel discouraged to study. Arrange pens, books, calculator and computer. Make sure to connect the computer to the Meiji UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply). A UPS is a device used specifically computers as back-up power whenever there is a power outage or brown-out. That way you can save your data before shutting down the computer. This is a very good investment for children who work with their computers for their research and projects. With the Meiji UPS, you don’t need to worry when a brown-out occurs, because all the kid’s homework can still be saved.

Encourage

  1. Encourage your child to eat and dress by themselves so they can manage things like taking raincoats on and off at school. Through independence, children get to enhance their skills, develop their personality and make decisions.

Limit Distractions

  1. MES 1404Limit distractions while studying. Detach kids from their cellphone, tablets and other electronic gadgets.Set a schedule on when they can resume using them. Try placing it out of their reach or place them in a charging station. The MEIJI QUAD EXTENSION SET MES-1404 will be useful since it has 4 international outlets and 4 USB outlets. With its Quad shape, you can utilize all outlets at the same time without the adaptors and cords being tangled up. You can charge up to 8 different gadgets simultaneously.

Before you get busy in buying your Christmas gifts and other preparations, please take a while to review our holiday electrical safety reminders to avoid any potential danger.

#1: Determine the number of available outlets

When decorating, determine first the number of available outlets and its location. Be sure that your installed electrical outlet can accommodate the total load of your Christmas decors. The most common problem when hanging Christmas lights is the unavailability of an electric outlet. If your outlet is far from your Christmas lights/ decors, use the Meiji 20 Series Extension sets (WRP 2104/2027) that are made up of polycarbonate ABS plastic material and ranges from 3-5 Metered wires. It also has 3 outlets rated from 1200 to 2500 Watts and your choice of white, black and even green colours.

You can also try our Meiji 13 Series Extension Sets (MES-1303 to 1306). This series consists of 3 to 6 international outlets with individual switches, shutters for child protection and fuses for each outlet. It also contains a circuit breaker to better protect your higher rated appliances. It is made up of fire-retardant plastic in grey colour, rated at a total of 2,500 Watts.

# 2: Turn off all indoor and outdoor electrical decorations before going to sleep or leaving the house.

# 3: Do not use electrical ornaments or light strings on artificial trees with metallic leaves or branches.

Or better yet, update your tree to the Fiber Optic Christmas TreesMeiji Fiber Optic Tree with programmable energy saving LEDs. This year, we have four new designs to choose from. The MFL-DL with LED dancing lights, MFL-RM with LED blinking colourful balls, The MFL-G that has steady gold fiber optic with colourful LEDs, and the MFL-SS which has LED stars with 8 different motions. With this type of Christmas tree, you don’t need to put on any Christmas lights and unlike the conventional tress, it does not heat up. Energy efficiency is another benefit of using this tree since LEDs only consumes 1/3 energy. This will add up to big savings on your electricity bill by the time the holiday season is over.

# 4: Do not overload electrical outlets.

Overloaded electrical outlets and faulty wires are a common cause of holiday fires. Avoid overloading outlets and only plug one high-wattage appliance into each outlet. Read the power consumption of your appliance and make sure it is within the capacity of your outlet.

# 5: Outdoor Christmas lights and decorations should be pluggedgfci with cover into circuits protected by Meiji Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GF-250/ MGF 250).

These are protective outlets designed to shut off an electric circuit when it detects current imbalance due to ground faults or grounded wires. Pair it up with the Meiji Weather Proof Cover (MCS-2204) for added protection!

# 6: Always unplug electrical decorations before replacing bulbs or fuses of your Christmas lights to avoid electric shock.

# 7: Make sure that you have a stand-alone Meiji Smoke Detector with Alarm (MSD-01/ MSD-02)
