The Department of Trade and Industry recently issued the Philippine Standard (PS) Safety Certificate Mark for Meiji brand extension cords, circuit breakers, switches and outlets. These Meiji items that bear the PS markings signify that the products went through the qualification requirements of the Bureau of Philippine Standards.

 

  • What is the Bureau of Philippine Standards (BPS)?

    The BPS is a governmental body under the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).  It is the National Standards Body of the Philippines and is responsible in developing or adopting, implementing and promoting Philippine National Standards (PNS). They are responsible for establishing Philippine National Standards for products, as well as test methods and codes of practice, to provide the technical bases for the importation of quality and safe products and for the inspection, testing and certification of these products.

 

  • What is a standard?

    A standard is a document, established by consensus, something set up and established by authority as a rule for the measure of quantity, weight, extent, value, or quality. Standards should be based on the consolidated results of science, technology and experience, and aimed at the promotion of optimum community benefits.

 

  • Why are standards needed?

    We need standards because standards contribute in making life simpler and increasing the reliability and effectiveness of the goods and services we utilized.

 

  • What is a product certification?

    Product certification is a process that determines whether a product is manufactured according to the requirements of a standard. Products under mandatory product certification are subjected to inspection and testing of the BPS prior to distribution and selling in the market.

Meiji Electric at Worldbex 2016

If you were one of the thousands of guests who visited Worldbex 2016 at the World Trade Center last March 16 to 20, I am sure you were drawn by the striking red and white booth of Meiji Electric. Guests couldn’t help but utter “WOW” when they pass by the modern-day booth.  It’s like a high-end shop of electrical items in the middle of the exhibit. Guests marveled at the various Meiji items that were showcased and arranged like cell phones in the booth. There were also two TV screens which displayed Meiji Electric’s other items. Not only were the products explained by the sales executives, there were also eye-catching models that accommodated all the guests’ queries.

Equipment Display

Meiji Electric displayed their extensive line of electrical controls and distribution equipment. These include the complete line of `Meiji’ Classic Series Wiring Devices, Home Panel Boards, Circuit Breakers, Extension Cords, Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCIs), Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVRs), Step-Down Transformers and Timers. Other innovative products such as USB outlets were also displayed during the exhibit.

Many visitors were impressed with the three new Meiji items namely the Meiji 4-Port USB Extension Cord  MES1405, the 3’’x3’’Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter with 1 International Outlet and 2 USB Outlets MGU252, the Quad Extension Set with 4 International Outlets and 4 USB Outlets MES1404. All items were sold like hotcakes because of special bundled promos and special discount on some displayed items.

Lastly, Meiji Electric launched a raffle game, wherein lucky business card-droppers and visitors; especially those who bought items,  got a chance to win Meiji gift items like chocolates, Meiji tumblers, Meiji red polo shirts and Meiji white T-shirts.

Circuit Overload

If too many devices are powered in one location, the single circuit will be overloaded and will relive the load by “tripping”, or switching off. This “trip” is necessary to protect circuits’ form becoming overloaded and this type of mechanism is designed to protect the electrical system in your home. In order to not experience this to ever happen, here are a few simple things you need to remember:

  1. Do not plug a lot of equipment into one outlet.
  2. Make sure there aren’t any loose connections in your outlets.
  3. Turn off and unplug devices that aren’t used

Pay attention to details and practice safe electrical procedures. If you can’t prevent this to happen and the inevitable did occur, here’s what you need to do:

  1. Locate the breaker box
  2. Locate the circuit breaker switch definitely flipped off
  3. Push the switch to a full “off” position then turn it completely “on” again.
  4. Once you hear the click, you have restored power to the specific circuit which means your job is done

Consult with a professional electrician if something arises.

 

There are definitely plenty other errors but these two are by far the most common. As long as you practice safe electrical procedures, you won’t need to worry on creating any mishap whatsoever. If anything out of the ordinary or something beyond your capacity occurs, simply call up your friendly technician!

It is an obvious fact that we Filipinos have to get ready for tropical storms especially during the months of June to September. Not only the recent Tropical Storm “Mario” caused a deluge in Metro Manila, it also exposed and highlighted dangers for us.

 

A medical student at the University of Sto. Tomas and a hotel employee died after being electrocuted along  España Boulevard in Sampaloc, Manila on Friday, September 19, 2014.

The first victim, 22-year-old student, was electrocuted at around 2 p.m., in the middle of the flood in the area. On another place, the second victim, was electrocuted at around 7:30 p.m., while he was passing through Maceda Street at the corner of España Boulevard.

According to a report by a police officer, first aid responders from the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) tried to revive the first victim and brought him to the UDMC Hospital where he was declared dead. The other victim on the other hand,was seriously injured.

If only these areas acquired a breaker which can prevent ground faults, this incident would have been avoided. We in Meiji adhere the importance of having protective circuit breakers.

Earth Leakage Circuit Breakers (ELCBs) are protective breakers of high performance when it comes to preventing ground faults and short circuits. 20140527_101356Many people do not know what is an RCBO. And because of this, we, in Meiji Electric, can help you understand the basic functions of an RCBO, so you can handle safety electrical measures at home without paying for the services of an electrician.

RCBO, also known as Residual Current Circuit Breaker with Over-Current Protection, is an extraordinary circuit breaker with three main functions:

  1. To detect residual current due to ground fault
  2. To detect overload or over-current on a circuit; and
  3. To protect against short circuit

Safety purposes against ground faults

Electrical experts will install an RCBO for safety purposes against ground faults which can kill people, especially to those homes and establishments which are most likely to operate in wet areas like bathrooms, kitchens, swimming pools of resorts, water parks, etc.  Another purpose is to prevent an overload on a specific circuit, thus, preventing accidents like fire, etc.

Detect a current imbalance

An RCBO will detect a current imbalance and an overload using the same interrupting method. They call it a ‘trip’. It works almost the same as Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCIs), cutting off the current when ground fault happens or when there is any current imbalance, thereby, protecting our lives. If current flow is not equal, it means that there is a current leakage to the ground, which could possibly mean someone is touching or has accidentally touched the live conductor of an appliance as they are attempting to use it, in this case, the RCBO will break the circuit or trip.

RCBOs are rated both by the normal current that are expected to carry, and the maximum residual current that they can safely interrupt also known as the sensitivity rating. It is also designed to interrupt a current overload in a circuit. This may happen when more appliances are being used beyond the rated current. A short circuit is an abnormal low resistance connection between two wires of electrical power to any circuit. A good example is when the cables of your electrical appliances are worn out and the live wires are connected improperly. This too can be detected by the RCBO.

They also have a short circuit interrupting capacity of 3000 Amperes. Meiji RCBOs have sensitivity ratings of 30 mA, 100 mA and 300 mA with very safe levels of interruption. When this level of sensitivity is detected by the RCBO, it will automatically trip and will break the circuit to prevent further damages. Meiji RCBO has a built-in test button, and should be tested monthly to make sure it is functioning properly.
