Definition of power fluctuation

To put it in a layman’s definition, “power fluctuation” occurs when the voltage in your house or any place that uses electricity begins to fall or rise, meaning there is an inconsistency in the flow of electricity.

For example, you use your air conditioner, DVD player and TV at the same time.  Then you noticed that your lights flickered a bit. That is a sign of power fluctuation.

No, we’re not talking about turning cars into robots. A step-down transformer is one whose secondary voltage is smaller than the primary voltage, but whose secondary current is greater than the primary current, as seen in the diagram below. The greater current makes up for the smaller voltage, giving the same wattage as the original. The step-up transformer, on the other hand, is the exact opposite of the step-down transformer. Its secondary voltage is greater than its primary voltage.

How are the voltage levels transformed?

When electricity is introduced into the transformer, it runs through the coils of wire wound around the iron core. In the diagram, the wire is composed of 50 turns. The core is then magnetized, which results in the electricity being transferred to the other coil of wire. And since in the diagram, the wire only has 10 turns, the voltage will turn out to be smaller. In the step-up transformer, the counterpart of the step-down transformer, the opposite happens, wherein the primary coil has less turns than the secondary coil.

Why do we need transformers?

These are built to make the voltage supply compatible with the voltage requirement of the appliance. Step-down transformers “step down” the voltage supply to match the smaller voltage requirement of the appliance.

Typically, the voltages used in most homes and offices are 110V and 220V; as a result, the typical step-up or step-down transformer switches between 110V and 220V.

Even though most appliances operate under these voltages, you still have to be careful when plugging in your appliances. Always check the labels for the proper voltages, and of course, the labels of the transformers before you purchase them. You don’t want to end up buying, or worse, using the wrong transformer. If you have any trouble determining these things, it is always a good idea to consult a technician, or even the clerk of your hardware store. They are well trained and well educated with these things so as to help as much customers as they can. It is, after all, better to be aware of these things than be ill informed and then end up in trouble. Bottom line is: be careful.

What we miss is the fact that sometimes, there are things that may not be too apparent but are still too harmful for everyone’s health at home. Carbon monoxide poisoning is one good example. And the truth is that carbon monoxide can actually be emitted by some home appliances we use in our daily lives. But before we talk about these home appliances, let us know first what carbon monoxide is.

Carbon monoxide is a colorless gas. It is also odorless yet it is very toxic. Carbon monoxide is emitted by incomplete combustion fuel, be it solid, liquid, or gas. It has been notorious for its properties since it can really be deadly despite the fact that it is hard to be detected.

In houses for instance, it is really hard to say whether there is already some carbon monoxide emission around. And what is even more frightening is the fact that when the amount of emission increases, it can actually reach a level that could kill people.

3. Kitchen or cooking ranges

Kitchen ranges with poor combustion can also produce carbon monoxide. This also becomes possible when there is no sufficient ventilation inside the kitchen while, say the gas range or oven, is running.

4. Water heaters

Similar to room heaters, water heaters can produce carbon monoxide if there is no ventilation while they are working.

5. Charcoal burners

It is always advisable not to burn charcoal inside the house even if they look extinguished. This also applies to tents and any closed area. This is because the burning of charcoal can actually emit carbon monoxide and breathing it in inside closed spaces can be really dangerous.

Carbon monoxide, indeed, is a silent killer. This is why we have to be more careful and vigilant inside own homes.
