Ever wondered why some plugs have 2 prongs while others have 3? Well, it is all about safety!  Electricity must flow in an uninterrupted circuit. Electrocutions often occur in homes due to defective products, such as appliances, power tools, and improper wiring. Children are particularly susceptible to electrocution not only because of their never ending curiosity but also because they can sense an electrical current as low as 0.006A (6mA). Faulty installations or repairs can also result in electrocution and are a primary cause of electrical accidents at home.

Take a look at your home outlets for instance, the right smaller slot is for the HOT wire, this is where electricity comes from; the left wider slot is for the neutral wire, this wire completes the circuit and feeds the electricity back into the system.

Implement this idea into a larger power distribution system and you’ve created a huge problem. If excess voltage is applied to the circuit, like a lightning for example, all the excess energy must travel through your electrical network, potentially exploding everything connected to it. To prevent this, a third ground wire is connected straight to your breaker enclosure and is driven straight to the earth. Now when a lightning strikes into your system, the excess energy is directed into the land instead, but we have now created another problem. Before all of this, the only way to be shocked is when you touched both the neutral and hot wires, in that case your body would close the electrical circuit and the voltage would travel through you, from one wire to the other. Now, because of grounding, half of the electrical system is always indirectly connected to you, through your feet. Meaning you only need to touch a single wire or a metal object electrified by one to become an unfortunate circuit. This is why some appliances have the third prong. It is a safety feature for devices with metal cases. It protects the items from wear and tear, aging and faulty manufacturing. A hot wire from within the appliance could come loose and make contact with the metallic case, without the 3rd prong, you could be lethally shocked when touching it. Appliances with this third prong have a wire that connects directly from the metallic case and back to the outlet. Voltage along this path would trip the breaker and cut off the electricity that could potentially kill you.

Meiji Items with Grounding

Electrical Safety with Meiji Products

Prevent serious injury or an accident from happening in your home by using Meiji GFCI’s, AVRS (Automatic Voltage Regulator), UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply), Wiring Devices, Extension Sets, and Timers which all have grounding or 3rd prongs.  The whole family of Meiji Electric’s GFCI’s MGU252MGF250GF250 and LG20 are classified as Class A in accordance with UL943. This is because all Meiji Electric GFCI’s have a 6mA sensitivity rating, unlike other GFCIs being sold in the markets which only have 15mA rating or even higher. UL Standard indicates the `let go factor’ of women and children should not be more than 6mA sensitivity rating because anything above this range is where `freezing currents’ start and it may not be possible to `let go.’ The Meiji GFCI is different from conventional receptacles, because in the event of a ground fault, it automatically trips, and stops the flow of electricity to your body, thus preventing serious injury. Meiji GFCI’s will work even without a grounded wire, even if a utility box isn’t grounded, installing a GFCI in it will still protect you (and your tools and appliances) from ground faults. The Electrical Code requires installing a GFCI for all wet areas, this is necessary to avoid ground fault which happens when electricity passes through our wet body before it reaches the ground.

These past few days it has been raining pretty hard, it is evident that the summer season has ended and the rainy season has officially begun. For some, this is a great way to cool down from the annoying summer heat. As we bid the hot weather goodbye, we should now be prepared for the heavy rains that the rainy season will bring. Aside from packing up our raincoats, preparing emergency kits, and staying tuned on our radio and televisions for weather updates, we must never forget to exercise appropriate caution when it comes to electrical safety.

Unawareness of electrical safety procedures during the rainy season may lead to damage to properties, injuries or even death. We listed down some simple guidelines which will help you keep your family safe. Here are some safety precautions that you should practice during the rainy season:

MES 1303-1306 EXTENSION SET

Turn off switch before plugging or unplugging

  • Before plugging or unplugging devices, make sure that you switch off the power points first. Do not overload power outlets and replace your damaged extension cords with high quality products. The Meiji 13 and 20 Series Extension Cord MES-1303 to 1306, WRP 2104 and 2027 are high quality power strips with ratings from 1,200 to 2,500 Watts that comes in 3 to 5-meter ranges. It consists of 3 to 6 international outlets for the 13 series and 3 parallel outlets for the 20 series.

Check for wet switches and wires

  • In no way should you use appliances with faulty, exposed or splintered electrical wires. Do not touch wet electrical switches or anything electrical with bare hands and bare feet.

Turn off appliances

  • You should never leave your homes with heat producing appliances still switched on (i.e. iron, oven, microwave, hair dryers, and electric stove).

Meiji Home Panels

Turn off Circuit Breakers when doing repairs

  • When doing minor repairs like wirings or replacement of circuit breaker, make sure that the main circuit breaker is turned off at all times. Update your home electrical system with the latest home electrical distribution system. The Meiji Home Panel (MHP) comes in different sizes which are modern looking and `user friendly’. These are modular, fire resistant distribution boxes applicable for home distribution use. It is easy to install and use with a beautiful design that blends with your interior. That way you do not need to hide it in the kitchen cabinet like the conventional panelboard.

Keep water away from electrical appliances

  • Be extra cautious when operating electrical appliances near water supply points and ensure to turn it off after use. Appliances which were immersed in water should be disposed immediately or taken to the nearest appliances service center.

Meiji IP54 Enclosures

Ensure enclosures are weatherproof and rust proof

  • Never try to repair electrical system by removing tree twigs off electricity lines. Make sure your outdoor enclosures are weatherproof and rust proof like the MEIJI MHWP03 and MHWP05 IP54 WEATHERPROOF ENCLOSURES. These are made with fine, white, polycarbonate thermo-plastic materials to protect your circuit breakers from rain, dirt, dust, oil and spraying water. These will also not rust like the common steel type, or become brittle and crack like ordinary plastic enclosures.

Keep electrical installations away from water

  • Do not get near amassed water around electrical installations that may have downed wires nearby. Immediately call the electric company and report the location of any electrical fault and downed power cables.

Meiji AVR

Be prepared for power interruptions

  • Expect power interruptions due to heavy rains and typhoons. Buy a MEIJI Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR) SVC 500-10000 for your refrigerators and flat screen TVs. It is used to protect your computers and other appliances against surging and fluctuating of electricity by maintaining the load voltage against voltage variances. The Meiji AVRs are available from 500VA to 10,000VA. It also has a `power-on delay’ of about 3 minutes so as to protect the appliance from sudden surges of electricity after a power outage or brown-out; however, it also has a quick-start feature to override this in case of an immediate need.

Be careful of loose wires

  • Treat every loose wire as if it is always energized. Keep your distance from it and do not touch it unless you are already tested it or is certain that it is indeed a live wire.

Meiji Voltage Protector with Timer

Install Voltage Protectors

  • Voltage protectors should always be installed together with sensitive appliances which are plugged in power outlets. Install the Meiji Voltage Protector (TC-V002) to your refrigerators, laptops, and other appliances. It is a device that protects your appliance by cutting off power as it reaches the minimum allowable voltage drop or exceeds the maximum over voltage rating. It also has a `power-on-delay’ of about 2 minutes which can help prevent inrush current especially after a power outage or brown-out that may damage your appliances.

Keep combustible materials from electricity sources

  • Eliminate any accumulated combustible materials such as dust, dried leaves, fabric and paper from the area where electricity sources and appliances are located.

Filipino homes are filled with various appliances, from large mainstays like refrigerators and washing machines to smaller tools like toaster ovens and hair dryers. These appliances often prove vital for day-to-day activities, and can be expensive to replace if damaged or destroyed. For this reason, you’ll want to learn how to protect household appliances from electrical disturbances such as voltage fluctuations and overload.

  1. Meiji Voltage ProtectorC360_2015-05-13-12-01-05-902

The quickest and least expensive solution for protecting appliances is plugging them into Meiji Voltage Protector. These voltage protecting devices designed to turn-off in the event of a voltage fluctuation, cutting off power to your appliances and protecting them.

Note that not all voltage protecting devices have the same feature and capacity. Meiji Voltage Protector has the capacity of 4400 watts in a 220V output. Meiji Voltage Protector also has a “power-on-delay of 2 minutes” which can help prevent inrush current that might damage your appliances.

  1. Meiji AVRC360_2015-05-13-11-48-45-898

Partner AVRs with your appliances. A more thorough and robust solution than using voltage protecting device is to use Meiji Servo-motor type AVRs for regulating the voltage even while your appliance is running. Because this type of surge protection works during a voltage spike, it avoids the appliance plugged-in to be affected by the spike. It offers greater protection for your appliances than individual power strips.

Whole-house surge protectors are usually designed to accept 240 volts, which means you’ll need 2 empty and adjacent 120-volt spaces in your panel to install this device.

  1. Meiji Extension CordC360_2015-05-13-11-54-53-257

Meiji Extension Cords are rated at 10A and are made from fire retardant plastic material.

This can be a good solution if you are dealing with many appliances but you lack wall outlets or you need power supply near your working area, just be sure that you would plug-in these extension cords to an appropriate AVR. Meiji Extension Cords have built-in fuse protection in case of an overload. Each outlet has its own individual switch. So when you are done using one outlet, you can turn off the switch to save on power.

  1. Meiji GFCIC360_2015-05-13-12-08-58-574

In many countries, especially here in the Philippines, GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupter) outlets are required in kitchens and bathrooms, and other wet areas. These outlets monitor the electricity flowing into and out of each socket and shut off the flow if the difference exceeds a certain amount.

Install Meiji GFCI outlets throughout your home. These outlets help protect against “ground faults” – when electricity flows out of an appliance’s wiring and into the ground through the nearest conductor. If this conductor happens to be a person, severe injury or death can result. Meiji GFCI outlets are rated 20A with sensitivity rating of 6mA.

Updating your existing outlets with GFCI outlets (especially in wet areas like kitchens and bathrooms) is a quick way to add additional protection against electrical problems with your appliances.

  1. Meiji UPSC360_2015-05-13-11-47-06-567

Protect appliances from power outages using Meiji Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS). A UPS is like of large power strip that contains a backup battery. Some of us may already know that our electronic and electrical devices are designed to work at a certain maximum voltage supply, and extensive damage can be caused by voltage that is higher than that for which the devices are rated.

The amount of current in a circuit depends on the voltage supplied

kolinFor instance, your aircon unit at the given rated voltage will carry a current just enough for the wire to absorb (giving off light and heat), but not hot enough for it to melt.

The amount of current in a circuit depends on the voltage supplied: if the voltage is too high, then the wire may melt and the light bulb will “burn out”. Similarly other electrical devices may stop working, or may even get burnt if an overvoltage is delivered to the circuit.

When the voltage in a circuit or part of it is raised above its limit, this is known as an overvoltage

When the voltage in a circuit or part of it is raised above its limit, this is known as an overvoltage. This is could be very dangerous to your equipment and to the whole house!

Good thing there’s Meiji Voltage Protector! This powerful plug-an-play device can surely protect your appliances from unexpected over voltages. By its automatic cutting-off of the power supply, your appliances are protected from over voltages and further damages.

Have you experienced having your computer broken by a sudden surge of electrical current? Perhaps you’ve had a light bulb pop for the same reason. Homes nowadays are furnished with modern appliances that are very high tech and efficient. However, the one disadvantage that these technologically advanced equipments is their susceptibility to power surges. Here we will discuss why your home needs to have voltage protectors.

What are power surges?

A power surge also known as transient voltage is a sudden increase in the flow of electricity that is significantly beyond the designated level for your appliance. For example, the standard voltage output of electrical outlets here in the Philippines is 220 volts. In the event of a power surge, the voltage of electricity that goes out of the electric socket and through to your appliance’s power supply skyrockets to indefinite heights but definitely way over 220v.

computer burn out

Why power surge protection is needed nowadays

If a surge is high enough, your appliances could be severely damaged. Computers are the most common victims of this very unpredictable occurrence. A computer that is hit with a power surge could immediately stop functioning. The worst part of that is you could lose the data stored in it in an instant! Components such as microchips and hard drives are too easily damaged by a sudden spike in electricity flow. Just imagine what happens to a light bulb if too much electricity is flowed through, it will explode in a fiery flash of light! It is for this reason that most desktop computers you will see in any household or office is connected to an anti power surge unit, or voltage protectors.

In the worst case scenario, power surges might start house fire. This is the last thing insurance companies and I’m sure ninety nine percent of the people want. Of course there’s always that one percent who want to remodel their houses by intentionally burning it down to get their insurance money.

What are voltage protectors?

Voltage protectors are there for protecting your appliances from voltage spikes! If you have a desktop computer in your home that wasn’t built by you, you probably have one of these guardian machines. If you aren’t sure what it looks like, you can go check out where your computer is plugged into. Chances are you’ll know immediately what you’re looking for, if you don’t then you probably don’t have a voltage protector and should seriously look into getting one as soon as possible.

Discussing the scientific and engineering technicalities of how voltage protectors work will require lengthy paragraphs filled with terminologies only engineers will probably understand. Basically, all you need to know is that modern day equipment, devices and appliances have components that are very sensitive to fluctuations of power and should therefore be protected at all costs. Take for example elevators which require a lot of power to switch on and off, should anything happen to the components that make it work because of power surges could mean a lot of trouble for people inside it and repairmen as well.

Drop by your nearest hardware and electronics shop and grab a voltage protector for all your heavy appliances. Of course, you don’t have to overreact and plug your light bulbs into voltage protectors. Just make sure that all of your most important equipment are protected.

During Christmas, It seems to be a yearly tradition that people buy new appliances for their homes. Aside from the fact that we can see these four capital letters everywhere S-A-L-E (which we all love!), there may be two more reasons for that.
