Ever wondered why some plugs have 2 prongs while others have 3? Well, it is all about safety!  Electricity must flow in an uninterrupted circuit. Electrocutions often occur in homes due to defective products, such as appliances, power tools, and improper wiring. Children are particularly susceptible to electrocution not only because of their never ending curiosity but also because they can sense an electrical current as low as 0.006A (6mA). Faulty installations or repairs can also result in electrocution and are a primary cause of electrical accidents at home.

Take a look at your home outlets for instance, the right smaller slot is for the HOT wire, this is where electricity comes from; the left wider slot is for the neutral wire, this wire completes the circuit and feeds the electricity back into the system.

Implement this idea into a larger power distribution system and you’ve created a huge problem. If excess voltage is applied to the circuit, like a lightning for example, all the excess energy must travel through your electrical network, potentially exploding everything connected to it. To prevent this, a third ground wire is connected straight to your breaker enclosure and is driven straight to the earth. Now when a lightning strikes into your system, the excess energy is directed into the land instead, but we have now created another problem. Before all of this, the only way to be shocked is when you touched both the neutral and hot wires, in that case your body would close the electrical circuit and the voltage would travel through you, from one wire to the other. Now, because of grounding, half of the electrical system is always indirectly connected to you, through your feet. Meaning you only need to touch a single wire or a metal object electrified by one to become an unfortunate circuit. This is why some appliances have the third prong. It is a safety feature for devices with metal cases. It protects the items from wear and tear, aging and faulty manufacturing. A hot wire from within the appliance could come loose and make contact with the metallic case, without the 3rd prong, you could be lethally shocked when touching it. Appliances with this third prong have a wire that connects directly from the metallic case and back to the outlet. Voltage along this path would trip the breaker and cut off the electricity that could potentially kill you.

Meiji Items with Grounding

Electrical Safety with Meiji Products

Prevent serious injury or an accident from happening in your home by using Meiji GFCI’s, AVRS (Automatic Voltage Regulator), UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply), Wiring Devices, Extension Sets, and Timers which all have grounding or 3rd prongs.  The whole family of Meiji Electric’s GFCI’s MGU252MGF250GF250 and LG20 are classified as Class A in accordance with UL943. This is because all Meiji Electric GFCI’s have a 6mA sensitivity rating, unlike other GFCIs being sold in the markets which only have 15mA rating or even higher. UL Standard indicates the `let go factor’ of women and children should not be more than 6mA sensitivity rating because anything above this range is where `freezing currents’ start and it may not be possible to `let go.’ The Meiji GFCI is different from conventional receptacles, because in the event of a ground fault, it automatically trips, and stops the flow of electricity to your body, thus preventing serious injury. Meiji GFCI’s will work even without a grounded wire, even if a utility box isn’t grounded, installing a GFCI in it will still protect you (and your tools and appliances) from ground faults. The Electrical Code requires installing a GFCI for all wet areas, this is necessary to avoid ground fault which happens when electricity passes through our wet body before it reaches the ground.

It’s school time again! With the start of school, families face new organization challenges. The kids probably feel excited and maybe a little sad that summer is over, some kids feel nervous or a little scared on their first day of school. Early morning alarm clocks, homework and projects are just some things to expect. Get organized now for the new school year ahead. Use these ideas to prepare your home and family for the busy days ahead.

Sleep

  1. TCV003 Meiji Aircon to Fan TimerThe first day of school is no time for a drastic adjustment of household sleep schedules. Instead, ease children back into a school year routine gradually. By this time, late sleepers should wake up earlier, closer to the hour they’ll need to rise when school begins. An alternative way to help them wake up is to set your aircon to turn off at an earlier time. Use the Meiji Aircon to Fan Timer TCV003 to automatically set your aircon to turn off at a specific time and your electric fan to turn on immediately after. It allows you to plug-in your air conditioner and electric fan in one unit with its international and universal outlet with 4400W and 20A load capacity. This way your children will wake up earlier and you save energy at the same time.

These past few days it has been raining pretty hard, it is evident that the summer season has ended and the rainy season has officially begun. For some, this is a great way to cool down from the annoying summer heat. As we bid the hot weather goodbye, we should now be prepared for the heavy rains that the rainy season will bring. Aside from packing up our raincoats, preparing emergency kits, and staying tuned on our radio and televisions for weather updates, we must never forget to exercise appropriate caution when it comes to electrical safety.

Unawareness of electrical safety procedures during the rainy season may lead to damage to properties, injuries or even death. We listed down some simple guidelines which will help you keep your family safe. Here are some safety precautions that you should practice during the rainy season:

MES 1303-1306 EXTENSION SET

Turn off switch before plugging or unplugging

  • Before plugging or unplugging devices, make sure that you switch off the power points first. Do not overload power outlets and replace your damaged extension cords with high quality products. The Meiji 13 and 20 Series Extension Cord MES-1303 to 1306, WRP 2104 and 2027 are high quality power strips with ratings from 1,200 to 2,500 Watts that comes in 3 to 5-meter ranges. It consists of 3 to 6 international outlets for the 13 series and 3 parallel outlets for the 20 series.

Check for wet switches and wires

  • In no way should you use appliances with faulty, exposed or splintered electrical wires. Do not touch wet electrical switches or anything electrical with bare hands and bare feet.

Turn off appliances

  • You should never leave your homes with heat producing appliances still switched on (i.e. iron, oven, microwave, hair dryers, and electric stove).

Meiji Home Panels

Turn off Circuit Breakers when doing repairs

  • When doing minor repairs like wirings or replacement of circuit breaker, make sure that the main circuit breaker is turned off at all times. Update your home electrical system with the latest home electrical distribution system. The Meiji Home Panel (MHP) comes in different sizes which are modern looking and `user friendly’. These are modular, fire resistant distribution boxes applicable for home distribution use. It is easy to install and use with a beautiful design that blends with your interior. That way you do not need to hide it in the kitchen cabinet like the conventional panelboard.

Keep water away from electrical appliances

  • Be extra cautious when operating electrical appliances near water supply points and ensure to turn it off after use. Appliances which were immersed in water should be disposed immediately or taken to the nearest appliances service center.

Meiji IP54 Enclosures

Ensure enclosures are weatherproof and rust proof

  • Never try to repair electrical system by removing tree twigs off electricity lines. Make sure your outdoor enclosures are weatherproof and rust proof like the MEIJI MHWP03 and MHWP05 IP54 WEATHERPROOF ENCLOSURES. These are made with fine, white, polycarbonate thermo-plastic materials to protect your circuit breakers from rain, dirt, dust, oil and spraying water. These will also not rust like the common steel type, or become brittle and crack like ordinary plastic enclosures.

Keep electrical installations away from water

  • Do not get near amassed water around electrical installations that may have downed wires nearby. Immediately call the electric company and report the location of any electrical fault and downed power cables.

Meiji AVR

Be prepared for power interruptions

  • Expect power interruptions due to heavy rains and typhoons. Buy a MEIJI Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR) SVC 500-10000 for your refrigerators and flat screen TVs. It is used to protect your computers and other appliances against surging and fluctuating of electricity by maintaining the load voltage against voltage variances. The Meiji AVRs are available from 500VA to 10,000VA. It also has a `power-on delay’ of about 3 minutes so as to protect the appliance from sudden surges of electricity after a power outage or brown-out; however, it also has a quick-start feature to override this in case of an immediate need.

Be careful of loose wires

  • Treat every loose wire as if it is always energized. Keep your distance from it and do not touch it unless you are already tested it or is certain that it is indeed a live wire.

Meiji Voltage Protector with Timer

Install Voltage Protectors

  • Voltage protectors should always be installed together with sensitive appliances which are plugged in power outlets. Install the Meiji Voltage Protector (TC-V002) to your refrigerators, laptops, and other appliances. It is a device that protects your appliance by cutting off power as it reaches the minimum allowable voltage drop or exceeds the maximum over voltage rating. It also has a `power-on-delay’ of about 2 minutes which can help prevent inrush current especially after a power outage or brown-out that may damage your appliances.

Keep combustible materials from electricity sources

  • Eliminate any accumulated combustible materials such as dust, dried leaves, fabric and paper from the area where electricity sources and appliances are located.

Air pollution and global warming have been long-standing problems in the history of mankind. Sadly, it is our very actions and inventions that have caused and continue to to contribute to the destruction of the environment. Since we continually disregard the risks that our practices pose against Mother Nature, we exacerbate the problem at hand. It’s a good thing that more and more concerned individuals are not only participating in environmental conservation efforts, but also creating environment-friendly innovations. Not everyone is an inventor, but we all can do our part; believe it or not, minimizing your energy consumption at home is already a great deal of help.

Minimizing energy consumption has a lot of advantages. Not only will you help reduce the negative impact on the environment, it will also reduce your electric bill. In addition to using AVR in the Philippines, you can minimize energy consumption by doing the following:

Unplug Appliances Not in Use

Image from Brilliency.com

Image from Brilliency.com

We all know that turning an appliance off when it is not in use is important. From the lights to the air conditioner, the television, and computers – make a habit of turning off devices that are not in use. Don’t just stop there; remember to unplug said devices. Some appliances have a standby mode which means that even when they are switched off, it is still consuming energy. Unplugging an unused gadget even when it is not on ensures that it absolutely cannot use up energy. You might not think that this is a big deal but when you check your electric bill after a month of religiously switching off appliances that are not in use, you’ll see the difference.

Plant Shade Trees

Image from Treehugger.com

Image from Treehugger.com

Is it too hot inside your house? Beat the heat without turning on the air conditioner 24/7 by planting shade trees. If it is too hot inside your home, ditch it and hang out in your backyard or garden instead. This way, you can cool off without spending a cent and possibly even protect your gadgets from overheating! Here’s another tip: if your backyard or front yard is not big enough to fit a tree, then try painting your house a light color. Dark colors will make it feel hotter inside your home. On the other hand, if you live somewhere cold like Baguio, then using dark colors in your house can be beneficial so you won’t need to use a heater as much.

Use Power Strips

Image from Kopi Incorporation Limited

Image from Kopi Incorporation Limited

Power strips allow you to plug several devices and turn them on or off all at once. Using this helps you organize the wiring better since they are all plugged at the same place. This also means that instead of unplugging your appliances one by one, you just have to unplug your power strip. Choose a power strip with a ‘hot socket’. This will allow you to switch on one device while all the other gadgets are turned off.

Choose Energy-Efficient Appliances

Image from EarthTimes.org

Image from EarthTimes.org

There are plenty of appliances that are now energy-efficient. If you have been using the same computer for years, think about choosing a laptop or desktop with energy saving features. Refrain from using screensavers because they do not save energy at all. Instead of using screensavers, just set your computer or laptop to go to sleep or turn it off when not in use. Buying an energy-efficient device is useless if you don’t use it so make sure to put those features to good use in order to make an impact on your electric bill – and the environment.

Take these simple steps to minimize energy consumption at your own home. Through this, you get to help save the environment and spend less on your electric bill!

avr philippines sims

There are different ways to protect our appliances. One of the most effective ways is by purchasing an AVR in the Philippines – it protects all plugged in electronic devices, even the most sensitive ones, from electrical surges.

Electrical surge is just one of the many problems that you should protect your appliances from. When devices are not maintained properly, it poses a risk of fire. Keep your appliances – and in turn, your house, loved ones, and self – safe by taking the necessary precautions needed to prevent your appliance from catching fire.

Watch Out For Sparks

Sometimes, an electrical problem might manifest itself through sparks. If you notice that one of your appliances sparks or shocks you upon plugging or unplugging, contact your electrician immediately. More often than not the electrical problem can be fixed easily. In some cases though you’ll have to let go your appliance and purchase a new one instead. If your appliance is deemed irreparable by the professionals, don’t hesitate to replace it for any reason. It might be costly but it is a safer alternative than continuing to use the potentially hazardous old device.

Install Smoke Alarms and Fire Extinguisher

There are instances when we fail to notice that something might be wrong with our appliances. That’s why it’s important to install smoke alarms in every bedroom and every floor of the house. It’s not enough to be able to detect that something might be burning though; you also need something to put out the possible fire. Aside from smoke alarms, purchase fire extinguishers and install them in every floor of your home.

Keep Appliances Away From Water

One of the most obvious ways to prevent appliance fires is by keeping your appliances away from water. This means that you should place your devices away from wet areas in the house like the bathroom and kitchen. Also, avoid stocking or using them in areas where water might accumulate such as garages or basements. If you still want or need to place an appliance in the kitchen – like the blender or microwave, for example – just make sure that you keep them away from the sink or other easily wet areas.

Inspect Wiring

If your house’s wiring is old, have it inspected. There are cases wherein an old house’s electrical wiring is unable to handle modern appliances. You might have to upgrade your home’s electrical wiring to avoid any problems. Although this might be expensive, it’s better than falling victim to appliance fire.

Inspect Power and Extension Cords

Always look out for frayed cords because they can be dangerous. If you see that your power or extension cords are damaged, dispose of it and find a replacement. Don’t run cords under carpets or rugs because the trapped heat may cause your appliance to overheat. Lastly, prevent overloading your extension cords by plugging in too many different appliances and extension cables all at once.

Appliance fires can not only destroy devices, it can also turn your house into ash. Start the year right by taking the necessary precautions listed above to keep you and your appliances safe from fire for the rest of the year.

During New Year, a lot of us usually make a list of resolutions on self-improvement. Some of the most common goals in New Year’s resolutions are to lose weight, make more money and to quit smoking. For a change, why not include improving electrical safety in our homes as a part of the list?

Meiji Electric encourages you to practice electrical safety measures that can help keep you and your family safe. The start of a new year is the perfect time for homeowners to start electrical safety. Some common causes of electrical fires are caused by faulty electrical outlets, old wiring, and problems with cords, plugs and switches. It is best that we are equipped with the proper knowledge to avoid any future losses that we can actually avoid.

AVR for Computers

Computers are staple in the modern person’s life. In the morning, we wake up and check our social media accounts, as well as traffic updates. At work, we communicate via emails and use computer programs to do our jobs. During lunch, we can order food online. When we get home, we browse online or play games to pass time before going to sleep.

The point is, computers have become an essential part of our daily lives. And although these equipment are resilient, we still need to be proactive in taking care of them. We all know the usual ways of protecting our PCs, such as keeping beverage away. We also use AVR in the Philippines to regulate the voltage level and avoid damaging the computer. However, there are other ways to take care of our computers.

Here are some of the ways you can protect and take care of your computer:

Wipe it Clean

We have a tendency to multitask while on the computer, and unfortunately, the ‘other tasks’ include eating. As a result, muck and grime gets stuck in the keyboard keys and on the mouse. Aside from refraining from touching your computer after or during eating, make sure to wipe it with a clean cloth from time to time.

Keep Magnets Away

Some computer models can be damaged thoroughly by magnets. Powerful magnets are actually capable of erasing a laptop’s harddrive!

Don’t Be Rough

Obviously, you shouldn’t be throwing your computer or any part of it. You shouldn’t be too rough with external devices as well – for instance, plugging a USB or external hard drive carelessly can damage the internal components.

Use Surge Protectors

A surge protector power strip doesn’t only let you plug multiple components in one outlet, it also protects your computer from power surges.

Defrag Your Computer

Don’t forget, you need to take care of your computer from the inside as well! Defrag your computer to improve its performance. This is like picking up pieces of data that are scattered in your hard drive and putting them back together.

Scan for Viruses

Part of protecting your computer from the inside is scanning your PC with an anti-virus/anti-spyware. It will not only protect your files from being corrupted, it will also protect you from possible hacking.

Declutter

Delete unimportant files and uninstall programs you no longer need. The computer can only store a limited amount of data and cause it to run slowly or even crash.

Back Up Data

Let’s face it, computers are bound to fail you sometimes, even for unknown reasons. Back up your data in case something happens to your PC so you won’t lose all your files.

Keep it Away from Windows

Make sure your computer is stored in a place where it is not subject to weather damage.

For the most part your computer should be running quite well on its own. The only thing you have to worry about not having control over are sudden power outages, which can damage your computer if it happens too often! Protect your computer from unexpected surging and fluctuating of electricity by using an Automatic Voltage Regulator – why not try one from Meiji?
